The Para Bowls Home Nation Championships will be held at the Newport Indoor Bowls Stadium this weekend (Friday 21st April to Sunday 23rd April). Teams from England, Scotland and hosts Wales will play for the overall trophy in the in the Glebelands part of the city.
Two teams of players with a physical disability and a team of visually impaired players form the squad. The three strong teams will be participating in the event, hosted by Disability Sport Wales and hoping to take home the spoils as following the recent announcement of para bowls inclusion in the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games places on the plane to Australia are up for grabs.
Pippa Britton, Chair of Disability Sport Wales said: “We’re delighted to be able to host the second Para Bowls Home Nation Championships in this format. A special welcome to our teams from England and Scotland. We are grateful to the team at Newport Indoor Bowls Stadium for their support to host this event, which forms part of preparations for the teams ahead of a critical qualification period for selection to the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games next year. Special thanks goes to organiser John Wilson and the team of volunteers ensuring this event will be a success.”
An international classification clinic will also be hosted at the event with Sheila Corcoran, IBD Head Classifier, and heading up a strong team of classifiers to assess players prior to the event. This forms part of the eligibility criteria for consideration to compete internationally with all eyes focused on Gold Coast next year.
