The Inclusive Zone Basketball (IZB) Competition Finals

The Inclusive Zone Basketball (IZB) Competition Finals took place at the Sport Wales National Centre in Cardiff, on Tuesday 4th April 2017. Regional competitions have been held right across Wales, where the winners and runners up then compete in the finals in Cardiff, with the aim to win the Welsh title and progress into the UK IZB Finals later this month.

Inclusive Zone Basketball is a British Wheelchair Basketball programme specifically designed for schools and colleges.  IZB is a cross between Running Basketball and Wheelchair Basketball that allows disabled and non disabled players to play together, with the court split into zones. There are currently 26 schools delivering IZB in Wales, 14 of which competed in the Welsh regional tournaments.

This year’s event was Wales’ third competition, which saw Ysgol Uwchradd Bodedern become victorious over Caerleon Comprehensive, Ysgol Uwchradd Aberteifi, Cyfarthfa High School and Yysgol Syr Thomas Jones. 1st, 2nd and 3rd placed teams were presented with medals from one of our Welsh Paralympic stars Kyron Duke.

Bodedern will now head to Worcester to compete against other regions in the UK Finals. Gemma Thomas, a pupil from Bodedern said “this is the second time I have been to the finals and it is so much fun! Of course I am really pleased to have won, the standard has definitely risen and so the matches were all pretty competitive. I’m looking forward to travelling to Worcester and hopefully coming home with a result from there too!”

Matthew Evans, a teacher and coach from Caerleon Comprehensive said “this has been our first time coming to the event and I must say it has been really enjoyable. Inclusive Zone Basketball is a fantastic way to get all children and young people involved in playing the game, regardless of their ability. The students really enjoyed it – there was definitely a competitive edge but more importantly lots of fun to be had, all in all huge success.”
