insport Club of the Month: BikeAbility Wales

BikeAbility Wales have been awarded insport Club of the Month for their continued work towards inclusion and for achieving insport Ribbon Standard.

BikeAbility Wales is a club and a charity that was set up to enable people of all ages and abilities to enjoy the pleasures and health benefits of cycling. BikeAbility Wales aims to access the physical health and psychological benefits of cycling for everyone, whatever their ability, race, gender or age. With two members of staff and a team of dedicated volunteers BikeAbility Wales can provide specialist cycles and conventional bicycles for any client to use. They run cycle sessions six days a week for individuals, families, groups, schools and organisations with a wide range of support needs. As a team, they are trained to assess participants’ needs, adapt the appropriate cycle for the individual to use and provide them with all the support and assistance they require. As a volunteer based organisation they also aim to provide opportunities for people to become involved in their work, and particularly seek to enable people who may have a disability to participate not only in the activity of cycling, but also in assisting in the running of various aspects of the charity. BikeAbility Wales provide one to one coaching for adults and children to learn to ride, cycle skills, training for new riders and group or individual Road Safety training to National Cycle Standards levels. BikeAbility Wales works with individuals, groups, organisations and schools from Swansea, Neath Port Talbot and Carmarthenshire.

We spoke to Mike Cherry the Manager at  BikeAbility Wales about their journey through insport “BikeAbility Wales initially got involved with insport as it provides a recognised standard. We hoped as an organisation that it would give people confidence in the charity and an understanding that what we provide is to a professional standard using good practices. Also, we hoped that insport would help to direct our service planning and provision and increase awareness and publicity of the charity.

He continued “BikeAbility Wales are brand new to insport but are hoping that through completing the insport Ribbon award that local people are aware that BikeAbility Wales are fully inclusive and it will encourage both users and volunteers to get involved with all the different sessions we have to offer”

Carly Smith Disability Sport Wales Development Officer for Swansea said “Bikeability Wales are a fantastic club. Their drive and motivation to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to access cycling really is wonderful. They are a small team but between them they continuously come up with new ideas to engage with service users and promote fully inclusive cycling throughout Swansea and the wider region”

Moving forward Mike Cherry said “Our ambition is to create further awareness of inclusive cycling opportunities throughout Wales and the development of all ability cycling  partnership projects, with organisations in The Wales Inclusive Cycling Forum. Through this we hope to further develop the awareness BikeAbility Wales, and increase the participation and an understanding of what we can offer”

Aled Jones West Wales Cycling Development Officer for Welsh Cycling commented “it is fantastic that BikeAbility has been awarded insport Club of the Month. The club promotes inclusive cycling for people of all ages and levels of ability at their base in Dunvant, Swansea. Every time I call in, there is always a warm welcome. It’s evident that members of the club receive a great experience from BikeAbility sessions. The club also supports the Inclusive Cycling Forum, an integral part of our programme at Welsh Cycling to ensure that we can offer a broad range of inclusive cycling opportunities to all riders, inspiring Wales to cycle
