Davies sets new World Record and Wins Gold

Aled Sion Davies set a new world record to win Gold in the F42 shot put at the World Para-athletics Championships.

Having already claimed gold in the F42 discus, this is the third time in succession the Welshman has triumphed in both events at the competition.

Davies' first throw was a World Championships record of 16.02 metres and his second a 17.52m world record.

“I was happy with it to say the least. It was phenomenal. This crowd; they got me on another level tonight. I thank every single person out here. What I wanted to do was be at the forefront of this event and take that world record. The aim is 20m and I believe I can do it.

“I’m in great shape but I believe there is still a bit more there. We came into this competition believing I could throw 18m which we kept to ourselves.

“Personally the embarrassment of the commonwealth; I knew that I wanted to make a lot of changes. If I wanted to take the sport where I wanted it to be which is a 20m thrower and 60m in the discus. I had to make major changes.

“I’m excited, I’m so excited now because I’m still young and I have so much more I can improve on technically and physically. It’s just the start.”

"No offence to Rio [de Janeiro, host of the 2016 Paralympics], this for me was bigger than Rio," said Davies.

"I told my coach at the start of the year that I wanted to throw a PB [personal best] and a world record and won gold in front of the home crowd and I did it.  As soon as that second throw left my fingers I knew that I'd done it. I've been working so hard and I am so happy to be able to throw a world record. Everyone knows how hard I've worked."

Looking ahead to today’s action, Stephen Morris runs again, this time in the T20 5000m and Jordan Howe runs in the final of the 100m T35 whilst Laura Sugar runs in the T44 200m in the final session of the Championships.

All the action is live on Channel 4 here: http://paralympics.channel4.com/watch-live/
