Ynys Mon Gymnastics Club achieve insport Gold

Ynys Mon Gymnastics (YMGC) are an established club running for over forty years offering gymnastic training for children and young adults between the age of three to eighteen in Anglesey.

In 2015 the Club became a Limited Company governed by four directors, and moved in to their own facility in the May of that year. As membership grew YMGC moved premises from the local Leisure centre in Holyhead to their own premises which meant they could then run classes when there was demand and that would suit participants and they were no longer restricted to a timetable.

Cathy Rowley, Director of Ynys Mon Gymnastics Club said “Our vision during this process was to make our Club grow by having the facility to introduce a wider spectrum of children to gymnastics. We also made plans to put a number of our Volunteers through their Level 1 coaching course and exam. Giving us more qualified coaches meant the club being able to run more classes for the children in the local area.”

Since 2013 YMGC membership has increased from 100 Members to over 550 along with an ever growing waiting list.  As a result of the growing numbers in 2016 the club expanded the facility and took over two of the surrounding units giving them another training area, changing rooms and toilets to facilitate the demand.

The Club’s success and growth has been recognised as they have received a number of nominations for awards in recent years.  In 2016 the club was awarded DSW insport Club of the year and Ciara Rowley was shortlisted for Young Leader of the Year for Welsh Gymnastics. Thus far, 2017 has been a successful year as Sara Cuffin was shortlisted for Sport Wales Community Coach of the Year and the club has been shortlisted for Inclusive Club of the Year, along with one of the club Gymnasts, Lily Owen, who was shortlisted for Disability Gymnast of the Year.

Cathy continued “Before undertaking our insport journey YMGC did not have any qualified Disability Gymnastics coaches. We had also never run a specific Disability Gymnastics session.  In 2014 we started our journey by working towards our insport Club Ribbon award, which we were awarded that December. After achieving this we carried on so that we were accredited our Bronze and our Silver Awards.”

Whilst working towards insport Club gold 80% of YMGC lead and assistant coaches have gone through their First Aid and the club have also appointed an Equity officer as well as a technical lead for the sessions. The club held a 2-hour free session to encourage carers and parents to come down and see the gym to show them what they could offer if their children wanted to come along and join in with the inclusive classes.

The journey for YMGC does not stop here, moving forward the club are arranging for coaches to attend an Autism Awareness course to be able to provide sessions for autistic gymnasts and staff will also attend sign language courses for deaf gymnasts.

Cathy said “Our main aim is to raise more awareness of our sessions so more people in the community can feel included within the sport of Gymnastics”

Siwan Davies, Head of Development at Welsh Gymnastics said “I am delighted to see Ynys Mon Gymnastics Club awarded with the insport Gold Award. The past few years has seen significant developments for the club with an increase from 70 to over 500 children from the island community accessing gymnastics weekly. Inclusivity is embedded and at the heart of the clubs’ organization, programmes and people. The team go above and beyond to provide opportunities for all to learn, development and achieve. I look forward to continue working with them in the future.

Michelle Daltry, Partnership Manager at Disability Sport Wales Said “Disability Sport Wales wish to congratulate Ynys Mon Gymnastics Club on their achievement of the insport Club Gold standard.  It is a real testament to the calibre of work they are currently doing and have committed to do in the future, and will ensure the ongoing development of inclusive gymnastics to disabled communities in the Anglesey area.  Congratulations to all involved.”
