“I first met Anthony on the 2nd January 2002 in the café of the Sport Wales National Centre, Cardiff. I remember the moment as if it was yesterday. It was my first day with Disability Sport Wales. I had already heard a lot about 'Ant' and was keen to say hello. I bounded over to him, a bit like an excited puppy and stretched out my hand. Ant casually looked me up and down, in the way only he could, let out a little sigh and said 'So what do you know about disability sport?'

Of course he was right, and in that moment so began the most wonderful relationship that lasted over two decades.

During that time we shared so much and enjoyed so many adventures together. Like all the best relationships we certainly had our moments. We would laugh together, fight together, sometimes cry together but more often than not we would celebrate together.

We would spend countless hours together in his apartment overlooking Cardiff Bay and plotting Paralympic campaigns over endless cups of coffee, Cornish pasties and always serenaded by his wonderful stories!

Ant was quite simply a Goliath of (Paralympic) sport. His impact and legacy is everywhere and Wales and GB can be rightly proud of what he achieved, both on the domestic and world stage.

He was a hugely successful athlete in his own right. A proud Paralympian, with a career which saw him compete against the very best in his cherished sport of athletics - and on the biggest of world stages. As with all aspects of his life, he trained hard and soon winning medals and awards recognising his athletic achievements became a habit.

His transition to the management of sport, and in-particular high performance coaching, was seamless and he proved himself time and again in my book as one of the greatest paralympic coaches of all time.

Ant was humble and selfless, always putting others first and keen to share his knowledge and expertise with his team around him. We all learnt so much. He was fiercely protective of his athletes. His shrewd eye for talent complimented by his winning mentality ensured that his athletes reached the very highest levels in their sports - National Champions, European Champions. World Champions and Paralympic Champions. Its already a long list but knowing the 'Anthony Hughes athlete pipeline' that is still in development his influence and impact will be felt for many years to come.

Ant had the ability to profile and place athletes in a range of sports where they would not just compete, but thrive and often achieve greatness. He was a no nonsense coach, at times considered by some as 'old school'. But, those who believed this failed to realise just how up to date and often ahead of the game he was with his coaching techniques and analysis. If an athlete emerged anywhere in the world who he thought might challenge 'one of his own' he would quickly do his homework - and by the time they realised this it was often too late and Ant was already one step ahead. His thirst for Paralympic sport and success for his athletes was unquenchable.

Much of Ant's desire and passion was driven by his own personal values, philosophy and drive for equality in all things. Whilst he had his own personal challenges he would often set these aside to help improve the lives of others. He was a staunch disability advocate and would never take a backward step.

Away from sport, his alter ego was that of a man who loved 'his boys' and family. He was caring, playful, mischievous, funny and always the star that would light up any room.

Ant was a dear friend who has left an indelible mark on my life and the lives of so many. From that very first day in the cafe I never stopped learning. He was one of a kind, perhaps the like of which we may never see again. Whilst I will miss him tremendously I am comforted by the memories.

I was honoured by his family to deliver his eulogy and hope that in some small way I was able to capture the essence and legacy of a man who will always remain so very special to so many.

Whatever your reflections of Anthony Hughes MBE, one thing that we can all agree on is that his memory and legacy will live on and he will never be forgotten.

What we found with Ant that made us “click” and become his confidantes: He was first and foremost a coach and he was always aiming for success, and always had high expectations of himself to help athletes reach their Dreams and Goals and to reach their full potential.

What is a successful coach? To us it’s someone that can identify, recruit, retain and develop an athlete from grassroots level to become an international athlete, without caring for any personal recognition – that is what Ant did repeatedly. That is a successful coach to us and that is what Ant was.

He did not just coach athletes to succeed on the track/field, he also ensured their well-being both physical and emotional, education, and everything else that was outside of the sporting arena to help them become a well-rounded person.

Ant was constantly looking for new solutions to develop the athletes to reach their potential. We had numerous discussions around technology, equipment, and monitoring, he had a brain that was constantly “spinning” (and you all know how much he could talk) trying to get the best plans in place and opportunities for his athletes. To us it was always a pleasure to have these discussions. Our discussions always ended with a “bantering” session of our origins English/Welsh vs Viking I cannot repeat all the words said between us here, but it was always about recognizing our friendship.

Anthony, could be tough and demanding, requiring full commitment of himself as well as his athletes and staff, but at the bottom of all of this was a “soft” caring heart, he would probably not like us to point that out.

We all know of his importance to the GB athletics team, and he was a very important part for the team’s medal success with multiple medals at World Championship and Paralympic Games. That to me ladies and gentlemen demonstrates the quality of the coach he was.

Personally, we believe that Ant did not care for medals as much as he cared for the happiness to see his athletes achieving their goals and dreams. We believe that Anthony will go into history as one the most successful athletics coach in Wales athletics history.

We truly hope that we can keep Anthony’s memory alive, and we are proposing a foundation being set up in his name, to support young, upcoming athletes. We will be the two first people to donate in his memory.

We lost one of the greatest persons we have known and respected.

Gill, you were and always will be an angel in Ant's life, and nothing will be the same without Ant at your side.

“Where do I start, I met Ant over 20 + years ago when he came for his first day at Sport Wales and right from the start we all knew he would make a difference not only to Welsh Disability Sport but across the World. I have never met a more inspirational Man in all my 46 years working at Sport Wales.
He gave me the opportunity and a passion to be involved in helping him to find new talent often by speaking to a total stranger. I can remember chasing down a parent in Cardiff Bay asking if their son or Daughter would like the chance to take part in sport, he could pick a future star from a mile off.
He believed that Sport could not only bring a feeling of belonging but could make a person grow and develop and do things that they never thought they could do. On many occasions I saw him when he took athletes abroad and with Gill, they showed them how cook for themselves always trying to give them more independence. I was fortunate to travel to many countries with Ant as a Driver and support staff for DSW and as Part of Team GB, for training camps, World Championships, and London 2012 Paralympics, memories I will cherish for the rest of my life.
There are many words that can describe him, including passionate, a mentor, inspirational, but most of all he was my Friend.
The World was a better place with him in it

“All the Hughes family were at Tommy More's the same time all we Wilmans were - 6 in each family. Huggy was in my year. Back then boys & girls barely looked at each other let alone speak, so there was no, or very little, interaction between the genders. It was only a small school though so everyone knew each other and we still do decades later in our small rural communities here around Buxton.

Huggy & I linked up in recent years after the tragic loss of his brothers Andrew & Chris (Chip) both passed away in the same week. I had been mates with Chip for several years. He too had a huge passion for life and for the things he had a love of, and where I was concerned, the community events I organised & my lifelong hobby as a piper.
The family asked if I would perform at the funerals - on the same day, one after the other. Huggy conducted both services with such aplomb, tenderness, love and devotion for his 2 little brothers. It was one of the most heartbreaking moments of my life.
Huggy used to messenger call me out of the blue, and as others have said, his 5 minute chats ended up being 2 hours or more! That's where I learnt where his time after we left school was spent. I was full of admiration for his sewing skills! He told me he copied the shopping bags someone local to us was making at the time, and then went to college to study it properly. I was shocked at this; he didn't take needlework with we girls at school, he had to do woodwork!
His best friends at school were John Baron & Andy Torkington. The boys spent a lot of time at weekends going rock climbing, scouting, proper outdoor pursuits kinds of things. John moved to America after we left school. Andy went on to become a fireman and then a community bobby in Buxton. Huggy kept in touch with him and more so when Andy became very unwell and passed away 2 years ago.

As so many have testified here in these incredibly moving tributes and outpourings of love, respect and grief, Huggy was a deeply caring, witty, passionate and loving man, despite his debilitating condition. Only 12 weeks ago he phoned me and asked me if I'd go to his sister's neighbour who was having trouble with his SKY connection! haha! cheek of him!

I wish I could give you the final honour and play my pipes at your funeral, Huggy - sadly it's not possible - but know that in a heartbeat I would have done it if was happening up here.
My heart goes out to the family who will be going through immeasurable sadness, and to all of you friends and colleagues whose lives have been transformed by knowing this incredible man, Anthony (Huggy) Hughes MBE.”

Lily Rice age 9 and Libi Phillips age 7 participated and Ant spoke to them with such inspiration and enthusiasm regarding what they could achieve. “We first took our son Ashleigh to meet Anthony almost 20 years ago when Ash was 12. He made the biggest impact on all our lives from that point on. Giving us hope and Ash the confidence he needed to take into his adult life. Ant also included Ash's sister Lucy everytime she came. He had the rare gift of making all his athletes feel so special . I was privileged to be able to help Ant and all his athletes whether it was training, assisting in competitions or just driving the bus around Europe, so many good times. Another of Ant's strengths was how fiercely he defended his athletes, he didn't suffer fools and didn't half get me in some scrapes. “Anthony you were a giant, a great dad, coach, mentor, protector and friend. You bought joy to our Sam’s life when we met you for the first time at Wrexham and you agreed to coach him. You showed him all the different things he could do, you gave him amazing opportunities, you made Sam believe in himself . Because of you he made a great bunch of friends, travelled the world and eventually he achieved his dream of competing in the London 2012 Paralympics. The rest as they say is history.
You were a friend to us as a family and like any family we occasionally argued but I think you liked that!
Last January when Sam passed you were so supportive and we shared so many memories and stories, some new to me and you did a beautiful tribute to him that was included in his eulogy. For that we loved you dearly. You travelled here in terrible weather with the guys to honour Sam. What a guy. You deserve the same but I have found it hard to put into words all that I want to say to you. Like with Sam we will have our memories and we thank you for them and for everything you did for Sam.
I bet he was waiting for you when you arrived at the pearly gates and said something like “Alright Ant, beat you here too didn’t I…”

“Where do I start, Ant you have been a massive influence and inspiration to myself, you have been a driving force in my sporting journey and other parts of my life.

From the early days of being an instrumental part of setting up Boccia in Wales and putting us on the boccia map. I have some great memories traveling to competitions, the one that always sticks in my mind was my first pairs international competition where we competed against each other and had some banter in the call room before our match, I remembering we were checking each other’s boccia balls and I said to you as you were checking the my equipment ‘a dogs arse has been on that’

Stackpole was my first training camp which was a great memory, You always pushed me as an athlete to the limit to get the best out of me, I remember one training session where you tested me by playing on my weaknesses to get the best out of me.

Most recently we had the pleasure of working together, even though it was only for a short time you were a big help within my role with DSW. You were always on the look out for the next boccia superstar for me to cast my eye over and then get my opinion after.

You weren’t just a colleague and a coach, you were a friend as well. Most recently we went on a Cardiff City stadium tour with some of your friends which was a great day, you loved taking the micky out of me when you saw my face plastered on one of the banners down the stadium concourse. You had a great sense of humour, that’s why we got on so well.

What I am trying to say is thanks. Thanks for giving me the opportunities to play the sport that I love for my country at the highest level and all the other opportunities that came from playing sport. I can confidently say I would not be where I am today in my sporting journey without you, so thank you Ant, Peace out.”

“The moment I found out my heart sank and it really hasn’t come back to its normal resting point. My heart is heavy with loss and sadness for the times we didn’t have yet. The jokes I didn’t hear you tell me. The tales of the mischief you and Dad got up to. The uplifting rally you always had for me.
You touched so many lives and I feel incredibly honoured to have been one of them.
I have so many memories spanning more than 30 years, from the weekend sports camps I’d come to with Dad, the fun weekends you’d come to visit and when we went to Portugal - each one is filled with laughter. And that’s what you leave me with, memories of happy times filled with laughter and smiles.

I don’t think I’ll ever meet anymore more passionate, proud or charismatic as you.

“What a journey we went on Ant! From grass roots athletics to the Athens paralympic games. Ant was one of the best people I have ever met and worked with. A good friend and an inspirational coach. Ant enabled me to overcome some of my difficulties and focus on what I was capable of achieving. He taught me how to cope with the pressure of competing so much so that, he eventually gave me the nickname of 'Ice Man' (cool under pressure!) I owe him so much. Although my sporting days are over, we still kept in touch and enjoyed a good chat. I will miss this so much, but will never forget Ant.”

“The tributes paid, echo our own thoughts of Ant. We have known Ant for nearly 30 years from when he took Andrew, as a young lad in grass roots disability sport, through all levels of disability athletics to become a Paralympian. The energy and enthusiasm Ant shared never faltered from the early days training on the grass outside his bungalow in Gobowen, to training in various stadiums around the world.
He had a knack of getting parents involved, his passion was contagious, he made us want to get involved and support the athletes. Ant made each individual feel like they were the most important person to him. The times we spent with him training, travelling and competing were so special. We worked hard, had the inevitable ups and downs but, we also laughed a lot. Boy, did we have fun! We were a family.
We admired Ant greatly for his grit and determination. We saw the physical effort it took him to get to meetings, events, coaching sessions and competitions. He never complained, never let anyone down, he was dedicated and committed. Ant would make us smile - the phone would ring 'Hi Bern it's Ant, am 5 minutes away be with you shortly'. We called this 'Ant time' as he would always be at least 30minutes away!
We are so proud to have known Ant and to be able to call him our friend. We will be forever grateful for everything he did to encourage and coach Andrew to be the best he could be. Disability Sport has lost an amazing Ambassador.

“I'd worked with NGB's in Wales for 15 years or so and seen Anthony and his work from a distance. I worked with DSW, though not on performance, for 4 years around 2016. Then I could see Anthony's passion for disability sport and for his huge commitment to it first hand (as much as any person in the sector for their sport) - but then started to see it was driven by his commitment to the person. His understanding of where they had been, where they were at and where they wanted go and his absolute desire to do everything he could to help them get there. An amazing coach and developer of people. I feel proud to have seen him in what he did and to have worked with him a little bit. I believe his legacy will live on in all those he coached and worked with.”

“Where to start, I’ve got to know Ant about 10/11years ago through my chaplaincy role with DSW. Ant inspired others, would do anything for them including going in and bat for them whenever needed, he thought outside the box and could always see a bigger picture. He set a high standard personally and professionally and wanted others to follow his example, and that’s exactly what people are doing. It doesn’t matter if you only came into contact with Ant a couple of times, he left you feeling worth something.
Personally for me, I feel privileged in knowing Ant and that he took me into his confidence which was huge for him. I soon learnt when he said “have you got 5mins” what he really meant was have you got 5hours. We talked (even about how proud he was of his family - his sister, brothers and his boys), we joked, we laughed, we cried, we shared in the small things and the deep and meaningful ones too.
I have learnt so much from you Ant with regards to disability and sport and life itself, thank you for that and count that as a real blessing.

“Ant, you came into our family 17 years ago and we have had so many laughs over that time! With holidays home and abroad not to mention the parties we held at mine and nans where a lot of gin and lager on our part (you always said I was uncouth) was a big influence on the shenanigans! 🍻
I've had the privilege of attending sporting and award events with you where you introduced me to some of Wales' top sporting stars!
On the weekends you weren't away with sport we enjoyed impromptu mystery tours in your car usually over in West Wales apart from the time you took us to Trago Mills which Gill and I refused to go into as we hate shopping!😏 So we eventually ended up in an antique shop in the valleys somewhere and we would always finish off our trip with food.
You were always available to help with any problems and you saved the day when you re-made a waistcoat for Lou's father-in-law to match the rest of the groomsmen at her wedding!
I could go on for ever with the memories we have but the most special one is when you, Bernadette, Gill, Louise and myself went for a lovely meal and then to see Les Miserables at the Millennium Center on the Friday before Christmas! Who would have known that was the last time we would see you 😥
We, as a family are going to miss you, RIP you incredible man ❤️

“Like so many, it has been so hard to find the right words for Ant. I met Anthony just over 12 years ago at a athletics talent ID event in Cardiff. At 16 this was my first disability sport event I had attended, short of confidence and no idea what I was doing with my life, that was until I meet Ant. Ant was the first person I felt who really believed in me, he made me believe in myself, he made me accept who I was and be proud of my disability! From that day on my dreams were set.

Ant gave me so much provided me with so many opportunities to become the best athlete and best person I can be. He took us away on camps/competitions to Europe were we had to learn to be independent learn how to live and become and elite athlete. It wasn't just about what we did on track it was how we conducted ourselves off it too.

Sitting on the 'Happy Bus' with Ant for 15 hours was an experience, we laughed every bit of the journey he always use to challenge me the blind man to eye spy!! I would never let him win.... I would learn the most obscure parts of the bus just to win! His stories, his sense of humour was like no other! Moments like these I will never forget.

Ant has been with me at my best moments in sport and also at my worst, the man always knew what to say, always calm and collected and made me feel special no matter what.

Ant - I will never forget the lessons you taught me and we will never forget you. Rest In Peace AH we will continue your legacy!”

“Can't believe you have gone so soon Ants. It was only on the 11th November you were on top form when you were on the panel for Ammanford AFC gold panel.
Before the panel we were talking about when we first met at Fox Hollies L.C in Birmingham back in the late 80's.
Your knowledge and support to many athletes was second to none. You had the ability to just look at someone and know which sport would best suit the individual.
When I joined DSW in 2002 I enjoyed supporting you to develop athlete in Carmarthen Leisure Centre and Para powerlifting sessions in WIS.
You will be soley missed, RIP Ants.”

“Ant since I first met you 10 years ago one thing that I could always rely on you for was a good story, and you could 100% guarantee that they would be packed full of You getting up to some kind of mischief while on your travels to different competitions and training camps. You always told them with a smile on his face that made me think that you were keeping a little bit of information back (probably the parts that would get you or someone else in trouble)

But the one story that I always remember is when I was chatting with you in a car park in Manchester after a GOGA conference. We started talking and you commented on a coat that Fiona was wearing telling me for what kind of cut it was and how it would be made. I was curious as to how you knew this and that’s when you told me that you had trained in Derwen college and had even been a tutor there. You went into a lot of detail about cloth and machines and how you had made waistcoats and how you use to hem your own curtains and even adjust clothes for some of the athletes.

As much as I found this fascinating there was a little something in the back of my mind (which was probably fuelled by your cheeky smile) that was telling me that you were making fun of me so I turned straight to gill to say “is he taking the piss out of me” and to my surprise she said no and that you were telling you the truth.

I remember that day my mind was blown because we got to witness your dedication to all the athletes and your passion for disability sport and supporting everyone to be the best they could be but still after 10 years there were bits of you that surprised me.

You will truly be missed and I only hope we can continue to support athletes and drive inclusion in sport with as much passion and dedication as you did.”

“Ant always had time for everyone, wanting the best for his athletes and his friends alike. I got to know him better when I was Chair of DSW and he was one of the people who welcomed me into the DSW family. “I did not realise for a long time how much of an impact Ant had on my life. I met him through a mutual friend and at a time when i needed focus and determination, Ant showed me the way. “Back in 2008 when I first met Anthony Hughes he have guided me para athletics he gave me more opportunities because He has huge confidence in me to be great athlete and it wasn’t for him I would not been double Paralympian for giving support to me and faith in me.

“Ant had first found/heard of me via a local newspaper following my accident & got my details. He called & got me involved in Disability sport wales. He never knew it but he saved me from many dark days & gave me hope in my darkest days & time of need. I will forever be grateful for all the hard work he did with DSW and all the adventures we went on.
His kindness & cheeky banter along with his caring nature made him not only a coach but fatherly figure to many disabled boys, girls, men & women.

A young 12-year-old boy with no legs flying about eager to break boundaries and find my place in the world! You saw the raw potential in me, came up to me and said “I am going to help you achieve everything you dreamed of” from there our journey started, you showed me what was possible!
From my first ever junior competition all the way to Paralympic Games you were there right behind me.

You taught me the art of coaching and how to put the athlete first no matter what, and it is more than just the sport, it is nurturing the growth of good people.

You pushed way beyond coaching sport, you taught life skills! I remember many times when we were away on camps, showing how to cook for the first time, giving us all tips and life hacks to make things easier dependant on our disabilities, to this day I still use a spoon to butter my bread.

After retiring from competing I was so fortunate to work alongside you as my mentor and manager, you shared your wisdom with me and showed me the potential I had was way more than just throwing a javelin.

I must admit I took for granted that you would just live forever and that I had all the time in the world to tap into and learn all the knowledge you have! I don’t know work, sport and disability without you. You have always been there, I now have to find my own path, however with the extraordinary support, guidance and resilience you have taught me over the years we knew each other, I will do my best to make you proud! You are ingrained in everything I do within sport and disability, and I know you will be by my side when I need that “kick up the ass, attitude” that you were known for when things just need to get done.

Thank you for everything you sacrificed to support me for all those years.

“I first met Anthony in 1992 we were both competing at the Paralympic Games in Barcelona ..and from there onwards he was constant support and mentor plus a close friend for the next 5 Paralympic Games in his managerial role for disability Wales ..He helped me to find guide runners and was always available at the end of the phone if not in person for support .. I had known Anthony for over 30 years and have clocked many miles all around the world with laughs and tears , He was always there to help solve any problems. Anthony was a driving force for disability Wales ..

“I'm not really sure where to start but maybe the beginning is logical. I met you in 2000 at the Glamorgan Uni sports campus after signing up to a 'how to coach disabled performers' course. It ran 1.5 hours over because you were so passionate and could talk about sport for hours. I remember you asking me why I was there? What did I want to be? I told you my dream was to work in Paralympic sport and you told me to stick with you. Invited me to NIAC to meet the athletes and it went from there.

I came and interviewed you in the Bay, the boys were little and staying with you. I remember talking for so long my family were ringing to check I was okay. I'd been there 5 hours, but wrote my thesis on you and Paralympic sport.

In 2004 I started weekly volunteering, and then you asked me to travel to Loughborough for a conference, supporting you. I remember meeting Chip, Martin, Bernadette and the rest of your wonderful family. But the most vivid memory from that trip, being my first time in the car with you was driving up the M5 and you suddenly shouting at me that your foot had slipped off the accelerator. You screamed at me to lift your trousers to put it back on, I literally thought i was going to die! 🤣

After that, it became more and more regular. Then the Guillain Barre hit, and I spent weeks sat in Rookwood keeping you company, writing notes, you made me bring a laptop and the nurse shouted at me for having it. But then you shouted at me harder for putting it away. The resounding theme always, how can we do more? How can we help more athletes? How can we be better.

My time at DSW saw me travel the world managing teams I'd only ever dreamt of, all thanks to you putting me on a path. Your knowledge was unparalleled. Your passion way surpassing anyone I'd met before or since. You wouldn't take no for an answer, and status was irrelevant. You always made sure people knew we weren't doing enough: these athletes deserved more. These people deserved more.

The hole that your passing leaves is epic. The world of Disability Sport is a better place because of you. I am a better person because of you.

You leave an indelible mark on my life Anthony Hughes and I will forever be grateful for that, and for being a small part of yours. My prayers and love go to your boys, Martin, Bernadette, Gill and the rest of your family. May these memories bring a smile. Rest well Ant, you deserve it x”

“It was an energising and inspirational series of meetings in both North & South Wales that life and work coincided. I provided S&C support to Bev Jones, Andrew Williams and Amy Brierly on behalf of WIS as the S&C Lead for North Wales. In meeting with Anthony, it became abundantly clear that his drive & determination, passion for athlete development and incredible ability to inspire creative & innovative strategies to promote athletic development would single him out as the heartbeat of disability sport in Wales. The collaboration that Anthony forged with athletes, their parents & coaches, high performance sport practitioners, medical teams and national technical coaches all conspired to promote unity through community. He was without a doubt one of the funniest people I have ever met - his one liners were brilliant and I would wait for his next hilarious remark or comment. Ant was kind, compassionate and ruthless with a vision for Para Taekwondo that only few understood or shared. He put Para Taekwondo on the map in Wales achieving national, international, world and Paralympic medals.
To me Ant was more than sport and DSW. He was a great friend to myself and Porl and went out of his way to always make us feel valued and included.
Writing this I am still in shock and absolutely gutted for this huge loss. BUT in honour of Anthony Hughes and his passion we will ensure his hard work in Para Taekwondo keeps going for many more years.

I've just got a few lines to say. As Anthony's brother I'm so proud of him and all the things he has done and achieved he truly excelled in them all. As a father he was devoted, passionate and proud of his boys. As a brother he was like no other, when times were hard he would be there for you.

Then we had all the good time's with him, travelling around the world doing sports, we went off to various places America, Barcelona and Berlin, to name but a few. The memories we made will last a lifetime. As a brother you smashed it Ant 🐜🥇

Ant started me off in sport. He believed in me. He helped me to believe in myself. He pushed me to be the best athlete I could be. I'm not unique in being able to say this. He did it for so many athletes. I count myself lucky to have been one of them. We all owe him so much.

I only worked with Anthony for a short time. In this time it became unmistakably clear that Anthony cared so deeply about inclusion, diversity and equity in sport. I don't think anyone will ever match his passion. Ant was never satisfied, there was always room to improve, always another project to tackle, always something that could be made better. His passion was infectious. We will carry on his legacy.

“Ant, this is incredibly difficult to write. I have been staring at the screen unsure where to start - words will never be enough. There are so many memories, so many stories and many, many thank you's I have for you.

I have known you since 2006, when I started working in community sport. I knew you as DSW Performance Manager, but in my eyes, you were the 'king' of disability sport in Wales. I looked up to you as this most incredibly inspiring person who had an infectious passion, vision and belief that sport was for everyone… I was hooked.

I will never forget the day we met (the same words I hear from so many people who know you), it was one of the most important days of my life. You took me under your watchful eye and encouraged me to volunteer in the projects and programmes you delivered, to learn and grow - I was so lucky to be given that opportunity and will always remain thankful.

You believed in me, mentored me and shared the most incredible stories about your adventures around the world but more importantly to you, stories about sport and the athletes and people you care SO MUCH about. After spending time with you I always left feeling more enriched having learnt something new from your incredibly knowledgeable mind and experience.

There's still SO much to learn from you Ant… and there's still SO much more to do. I still expect the phone to ring or a what's app to come through about someone new you have met... "you mark my words Gem; this person is going to be incredible and just remember, Wales may be small but it's mighty and bursting with talent, passion and pride" - (I'll leave out some of the more colourful words you'd have included in that sentence, Ant!)

Your determined mindset, energy and belief in people and Wales will continue to be driven by the team you have built, and in your very own words "Disability Sport runs through our veins". We are incredibly honoured to have this platform you have built and trust us with and will continue to make you so very proud. I promise. Diolch Ant xxx”

“I am not sure where to start Ant ... actually, with the most enormous 'thank you'! Without your input, disability sport in Wales, the UK and wider wouldn't be where it is today; without you, my passion for inclusion, diversity and equity would be less; without you, Disability Sport Wales wouldn’t be the organisation it is today; and without you, chats about life the world and everything would have been nowhere near as fun or interesting. You always inspired me, you guided me, you supported me, and you absolutely always kept me on my toes :) We can’t ever replace you Ant, nor would we want to. What you gave to DSW, to me, to the team, and to disabled people across Wales and the World was absolutely unique. You cared in a way that always took the whole person in to account, you fought for everything like it was the last, and you gave so much of your life to us all.

DSW is imprinted in you like a stick of rock, with pride and immense dedication you always had the best interests of every disabled person at the forefront of every decision you made. I was asked recently whether you would be proud of what you had achieved and the impact you made, and I know you were (the speed at which you talked about each athlete who had just medalled, or just got to an event, or who had just had a brilliant session, made that clear), but I also know you would have said 'but there is more to do Fi, it still isn't enough'. And of course, you were right, there is; and I promise Ant, we will keep trying to get it right.

Some Friday afternoons we would have an impromptu '5 minutes' (and I knew that would be at least an hour) and the parts of those catch ups I loved the most were when we would talk about our boys, your two and my one. How proud 'your two' made you, what van or house they were looking at, what jobs and successes they were having, and I listened to the love in your voice and the stories of how they have become the young men they are ... it always made your eyes sparkle.

And now I am sitting here writing something it is far too soon to write, but I will finish as I started. Thank you Ant, for all you were, all you gave and everything you taught me. You rest, but we wont … there’s work to be done xx”
