The Equality Standard is a framework for National Governing Bodies of sport to work towards in order to ensure that provision of equality of opportunity, access and involvement is assured to all those individuals who are interested in getting involved with their sport. The framework is collectively endorsed and shared by the 5 Sports Councils through the Sports Councils Equality Group (SCEG). It was initially launched in 2004, and is frequently reviewed and updated in order to ensure it is fit for purpose and reflective of equitable expectation.
In Wales, Sport Wales have adopted a progressive approach to the Equality Standard; in addition to the Equality Advisor assigned to the Governing Body (who provides support and guidance about each element of the level being assessed), there is also the opportunity to present to a panel of interested experts within the field of equality, from with Sport Wales and its partner organisations. This provides a great opportunity for the WGB to identify and share the good practice they have developed with regards to equity, and the discuss with the panel areas where they would benefit from further assistance as they move forward through the levels.
Disability Sport Wales have created a range of resources which will support Welsh Governing Bodies of sport better understanding and providing for their disabled membership, participants and potential volunteers; as well as having developed insport NGB, which is a toolkit intended to support WGB's in delivering (disability) sport, and sport for disabled people to those who want to be involved within their sport.
