Welsh Athletes have been in medal winning form in the last major competition prior to the Rio Paralympics. Seven Welsh athletes were part of the GB Team competing at the IPC Athletics European Championships, being held in Grosseto, Italy.
Leading the charge is Aled Davies (Ryan Spencer Jones) who claimed a historic double with gold in the F42 Shot Put and Discus. The Cardiff AAC athlete threw a distance of 16.11m to win the Shot on the first full day of competition. It was in the Discus that the Bridgend born athlete really showed his dominance, by not only winning but breaking his own World Record by five metres with a huge winning throw of 54.14m. Also in the field, Kyron Duke (Anthony Hughes) finished 4th in the F40/41 Shot with a throw of 10.50m.
On the track, another Cardiff AAC athlete narrowly missed out on the medals in the middle distance events, with Steve Morris (James Thie) finishing 5th in the T20 1500m in a time of 4.00.46, and finishing an agonising 4th in the 800m despite leading for much of the last lap – his time of 1.58.09 was a seasons best.
Jordon Howe (Keith Antoine) picked up a bronze in the T35 100m, achieving the same position as he did 2 years ago in Swansea, his time of 13.13 seconds was his quickest of the season. In addition, Jordan also picked up a further bronze medal in the T35 200m finishing in a seasons best time of time of 28.27.
Olivia Breen (Julie Hollman) was also in action in the F38 Long Jump, setting a new personal best of 4.34m, just missing out on a medal, finishing in 4th place. The day before Olivia had finished 6th in a very competitive T38 200m in a time of 28.37. Olivia competed in the 100m, matching her 200m placing, finishing 6th. On the final day of competition, Olivia was part of the T35-T38 team that broke the World Record in taking gold in the 4x100m relay.
In the Women’s F20 Shot Final was Deeside AAC athlete Sabrina Fortune (Ian Robinson) who finished just outside the medals in 4th place with a throw of 12.14m.
