Para-cyclist James Ball won Wales' first medal of the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.

Torfaen born Ball and his guide Pete Mitchell, won silver in the men's B&VI 1,000m time trial with a time of 1:00:900. Ball finished second behind Scotland rider Neil Fachie and his pilot Matt Rotherham at the Anna Meares Velodrome in Brisbane.

"It feels absolutely fantastic, it's a great honour to finally get the first one for Team Wales," said Ball. "I hope it's a confidence boost for the whole team."

"I'm always on tenterhooks with (Neil Fachie). I've just come from Rio in the World Championships and knew he would be good competition.I'm just pleased to be so close to him."

"It's my first Commonwealth Games. I hope I've done the team proud and will treasure it for the rest of my life."

Ball and Mitchell will hope to get on the podium again on Saturday in the B/VI Sprint.

Swimmers Jack Thomas and Alex Rosser finished fifth and sixth respectively in the Men's S14 200m Freestyle.

Julie Thomas and Gilbert Miles alongside John Byron and John Wilson narrowly lost 14-11 in their opening group match against New Zealand in the B2/B3 Pairs. In addition, Pauline Wilson, Jonathan Hubbard and Ray Lillycrop also lost their first group match against New Zealand in the B6-B8 Triples. Both will be back in action tomorrow (Friday 6th April) at 7am and 10am (UK Time).
