Ceredigion is one of seven local authorities in Wales to sign up to a development scheme to improve access to sport for disabled people.

And one of the first steps as part of the Insport Initiative will see a new Ceredigion based Wheelchair Basketball club officially launched on 17 September.

Ceredigion has joined Conwy, Wrexham, Pembrokeshire, Newport, Torfaen and Caerphilly in the Insport scheme.

Insport has been launched to provide sport sessions to disabled people throughout the community.

And Gemma Cutter, the Disability Sport Wales development officer for Ceredigion, said the scheme, which includes members of the Federation of Disability Sport Wales, will help more disabled people get involved in sport.

She said: "FDSW have designed the Insport programme so that they support the partner in developing inclusive provision, opportunity and practices which will ensure that disabled people gain access to the level of participation or performance they require".

The councils that have signed up to Insport will now work with Disability Sport Wales to put together a programme that will help and provide assistance to other local authorities introduce the scheme in future.

Gemma said: "Insport is a three- tiered identification and accreditation process which sports clubs can go through to show they are committed to providing and development inclusive sport".

And one of the first groups in Ceredigion to benefit from Insport is the West Coast Warriors Wheelchair Basketball Club which has received a ribbon award.

The new club will be officially launched at Aberystwyth’s Plascrug Leisure Centre between 1pm and 4pm on Saturday, 17th September.

The club will train weekly and compete in league matches.

The club is open to anybody who has injuries or physical disabilities, even if they are not a wheelchair user.
