Llangorse Sailing Club Water Sports Fun Day for people with disabilities

In 2009 Llangorse Sailing Club were approached by Beverley Tucker, Powys County Council’s Disability Sports Officer to see if the club would be willing to host a Water Sports Fun Day for people with disabilities. The club willing agreed to do so and the day attracted over sixty people with a range of disabilities right up to those confined to wheel chairs.

The participants had the opportunity to go out onto the lake in the sailing club’s training dinghies, specialist dinghies for people with disabilities or out on kayaks belong to members of the Ocean Kayaking organisation, with a few having a ride out on the lake in one of the club’s safety boats.

It was quite amazing how many of the people with disabilities took the opportunity to get out onto the water and the smiles on their faces was ample compensation for those who had volunteered to assist on the day.

2010 saw a repeat but the word had spread and last years event attracted over eighty people with disabilities to take part and it was obvious from their smiles and chatter that they had enjoyed the day immensely.

As the last two years event have been so successful, the club were asked to host the event again in 2011 and it will be held at Llangorse sailing Club on Saturday 25th June, commencing at 10am and going on until 4pm.   There will be a free BBQ over lunch time and it will be possible to purchase tea, coffee, sweets and other snacks from the galley during the day.

The organisers look forward to entertaining an even larger number of people with disabilities on Saturday 25th, so please come and enjoy doing something different.
