To celebrate the 10th anniversary of Newport’s velodrome the International Paracycling Cup will be held at the venue.
The event will be held from 29 November until 1 December and is anticipated to attract some of the world’s top Paracyclists.
Amongst the riders will be a strong team from the Disability Sport Wales Academy programme led by Coach Neil Smith. Having come through the Academy ranks, Rhiannon Henry (Bridgend) - been a Paralympic swimmer, and Matt Ellis (Hereford) will be competing for GB at the event. Joining Matt on the tandem will be pilot & Academy member Ieuan Williams from Cardiff.
Other Academy members competing at the weekend include:
James Brookman - Vale of Glamorgan
Matt Jones - Cardiff
Matt Faucher - Caerphilly
Nia Knight - Carmarthenshire (Pilot Katie Curtis - Cardiff)
Hywel Davies - Ceredigion
Lauren Booth - Chippenham
Connor Brock - Newport
Daniel Norton - Cwmbran
Neil Smith, Academy Coach commented: "It's great to see our Academy athletes given the opportunity to compete at an International event in their own backyard. The Academy has produced a number of high calibre para-cyclists over the years including Paralympic Gold medallist Mark Colbourne MBE from Tredegar. The depth of talent here in Wales is evident with the programme we've developed here at the Velodrome, and I'm sure we'll see some these Academy athletes compete at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games next year and the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games".
Speaking about the event, Newport City Council cabinet member for leisure and culture, Councillor Debbie Wilcox, said: "Newport’s velodrome is approaching its tenth anniversary and in that time has seen some of GBs top cyclists train at the venue. The latest news that it will host the international paracycling cup shows the high calibre of the facilities.
"In its 10-year history the velodrome has seen thousands of people try out the track. Last year when there were open days to watch Team GB cyclists hundreds of people showed their support and I hope that the same support will be shown at the international paracycling event."
