The Welsh Para Table Tennis players caused a stir at the Belgium Open recently with European champion Rob Davies (Brecon) winning his singles events in Sint-Niklaas, while Ashley Davis (pictured - Cardiff) grabbed his first international medal, winning Bronze in the Class 3 event. Additionally Nathan Thomas (Cardiff) partnered Englishman Kim Daybell in the Class 10 team event taking Bronze, narrowly losing to the Russian pair.

Davies, the world number one, had to come from 2-1 down in his final against old rival Jean-Francois Ducay from France, who had beaten Paralympic and world champion Holger Nikelis in the semi-finals. The 29 year old from Brecon, who had earlier recorded a much easier 3-0 victory against Ducay in the group stages, showed all his fighting spirit to clinch the gold 3-2.

"I beat him 3-0 in the group stages," said the 29 year old world number one from Brecon, "but the final was a lot harder, mentally more than anything. He played a much more attacking game and put me under a lot of pressure but I was able to claw my way back. I didn’t want to lose my number one ranking and I think I am just mentally stronger than I was last year. It’s been a dream year for me and I’m just really happy to end it on a winning note."
