The Wales Wheelchair Basketball Association (WWBA) has appointed two coaches to lead its national youth teams over the next two years. Caroline Matthews takes over as U19 Head Coach and Lee Coulson as U15 Head Coach.

Caroline Matthews represented Great Britain in wheelchair basketball from 2002 to 2011, including the Athens 2004 Paralympic Games and the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games and has recently coached the Wales U23s.

Caroline says of her appointment:

“I'm thrilled to have been appointed and I can't wait to start pulling together the U19 training programme and squad for this year. I'm looking forward to working with the WWBA to make sure that anyone involved in wheelchair basketball in Wales has the best experience and opportunities possible”

Lee Coulson has coached the Wales U15 squad for the previous three years, leading the team to its first medal at the BWB Junior Championships 2017. Lee was recently awarded a British Empire Medal in the New Year’s Honours for services to disability basketball.

Lee is looking forward to continuing his work in Wales with the U15s, and says:

"It is an absolute honour and a privilege to be appointed as the U15 Wales Wheelchair Basketball Team Head Coach.   I am looking forward to working with the talented juniors that we have here in Wales and hopefully grow on the success of the last 3 years”.

Lou Englefield, Wales Wheelchair Basketball Association Chair says of the appointments:

“As wheelchair basketball looks set to be included for the first time at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games, the association is delighted with these two appointments. The work undertaken with our young players over the coming two seasons will help build our campaign to field Wales national teams at Commonwealth Games 2022”
