British Wheelchair Basketball (BWB) and Disability Sport Wales has secured funding to deliver an exciting opportunity to drive development and participation in Wales for people with disabilities.
Wheelchair basketball in the UK has entered a very exciting period and Wales has been identified as key focus to drive participation and redress the participation rates in Wales for people with disabilities.
We are seeking to appoint a part-time officer with a strong and proven record in sports development, to continue to build upon the network of wheelchair basketball opportunities and clubs across Wales. The officer will develop a sustainable regional support programme to ensure that ‘participation rates’ in Wheelchair Basketball in Wales continues to rise.
The successful candidate will be an excellent motivator who is creative and innovative in developing wheelchair basketball in Wales. The successful candidate will enable wheelchair basketball to engage with the delivery system of sport in Wales, developing opportunities to support the delivery of British Wheelchair Basketball’s ‘Whole Sport Plan’. Legacy and sustaining development in Wales will be a key driver for the successful candidate.
Overview
The Welsh Development Officer will strategically lead the British Wheelchair Basketball programme in Wales through engagement with key partners in the delivery system of sport, and be the principal liaison with agencies in the delivery aspects of the clubs, participation and initiatives related to development.
The post is to ensure existing clubs have the capacity to grow, identify and develop new clubs, enhance delivery and increase participation whilst ensuring the infrastructure and provision of the workforce across Wales is both professional and of the highest standard.
Finally the post will assist in the formulation, redefining and presentation of Legacy and Sustainability plans in Wales in preparation for post the initial life of the programme.

Key Responsibilities
Geographical
- · Identify the local, regional and national areas of need for development in Wales.
- · Prioritise the development of a strong functioning Association for Wheelchair Basketball in Wales to provide a sustainable programme together with a lobbying/action function to drive the sport forward.
- · Develop and deliver a local competition for developing clubs and players to encourage and sustain physical activity through wheelchair basketball in Wales.
- · Support the Home Country Association to become an advisory group for strategy and delivery in Wales.
- · Identify local funding and partner intelligence to be shared to support growth.
Club Development
- · Develop new clubs where there is perceived latent demand at the identified sites in Wales, working with DSW and other agencies where necessary to broker support.
- · Support multi-sport clubs wishing to develop wheelchair basketball sections.
- · Support the recruitment and training of Coaches, volunteers and officials both in new and existing clubs
- · Enable clubs to engage with development in Wales and support an outreach programme to attract more players.
- · Broker a relationship between existing clubs and new club development areas to enhance participation.
- · Deliver a series of taster events throughout Wales around sustained activity in groups to grow participation.
- · Support the delivery of club mark in Wales.
Young People Specific Interventions
- · Continue to develop and grow the offer of Inclusive Zone Basketball and promote the opportunities to play Wheelchair Basketball in Education.
- · Engage with HE / FE Institutions to deliver Wheelchair Basketball.
- · Develop links between new and existing clubs so that they are fully integrated in to the ‘Delivery System’ with the relevant partners.
- · Develop the club system to engage with the Education sector, ensuring the capacity to get out into reach out into the community.
- · Empower members in clubs to take an active role within the governance and delivery of their clubs and wheelchair basketball in Wales.
- · Develop a full pathway for young people and females to engage in competition.
Education and Training
- · Develop and implement a framework for the delivery of the workforce courses for wheelchair basketball throughout Wales.
- · Work with other sports to encourage recruitment into wheelchair basketball officiating roles
- · Support the development of coaches in Wales and ensure sufficient opportunities to develop are provided.
- · Support the recruitment and training of volunteers in Wales such as club officials and statisticians.
Management and Coordination of National and Regional Teams
- · Organisation of Training Sessions
- · Provide regular competition opportunities
- · Coordinate selection of U15, U19 and U25 Welsh squads
- · Coordinate recruitment of Coaching and Team Staff
- · Support Team Managers to fulfil administration of competition requirements
Talent Development
- · Work with BWB and DSW Talent Officer to ensure Welsh Player Pathway is clear and provides links to the GB Programme
- · Ensure training opportunities and mentoring for Coaches involved in Welsh Squads
- · Support Talented Athletes to access support
General
- · Monitor and evaluate the programme to the Key Performance Indicators detailed for Wales.
- · Prepare reports on performance for the DSW, BWB, Board and funding agencies.
- · Be able to manage budgets.

- · Have experience of sport development and the delivery system.

- · Be a leader and have excellent personal skills.
- · Have an innovative and open style, capable of embracing new ideas and critically monitoring and evaluating programmes.
- · Deliver under pressure and to agreed time scales.
- · Work individually and in a team environment.
- · Have the ability to inspire colleagues, partner organisations, sponsors and funding agencies.
- · Have excellent oral and written communication skills.
- · Be willing to work unsociable hours such as evenings and weekends.
- · Be computer literate with the Microsoft office suite.
- · Hold a full UK driving licence.
