Wheelchair sports event a spectacular success

The Wheelchair Sports Spectacular 2011 has been hailed a great success with a record attendance of over 550 participants.

The two-day annual event is run by Sport.Cardiff and Disability Sport Wales, and offers children, young people and adults the opportunity to take part in over 20 different sports, all under one roof at the University of Wales Institute Cardiff’s National Indoor Athletics Centre (NIAC).1

Local clubs showcased a wide variety of sports with the aim of recruiting more members. Sports on offer included badminton, table tennis, archery, wheelchair basketball, wheelchair rugby, inline sledge hockey, golf, handycycling, climbing, fencing and powerchair football.

Executive Member for Sport, Leisure and Culture, Cllr Nigel Howells and The Lord Mayor of Cardiff , Cllr Prof Delme Bowen attended the event. They were joined by local Paralympians including World Champion shot put thrower Nathan Stephens who aimed to inspire people to join a local club.

Mandeville, the official London 2012 Paralympic mascot also made an appearance as he tried a few of the sports for himself and toured the event which was supported by Cardiff Devils Ice Hockey Club and Cardiff City Football Club. 

Cardiff is proud to have been chosen to host  pre-Games training camps for both the Australian and South African Paralympic Teams in the lead up to the London Games in 2012. The city has been selected due to its excellent sporting facilities and infrastructure, professional approach of staff and the general friendliness of the people of Cardiff and Wales. 2

Cllr Howells said: "The Wheelchair Sports Spectacular continues to go from strength to strength and encourages participation in wheelchair sports whilst making it more accessible to a larger audience.

"Sport.Cardiff is committed to providing disability provision in many different sports and as part of the London 2012 Games legacy hopes to inspire future Paralympians from the city.

"Pre-Games training camps ahead of London 2012 will not only provide economic, cultural, educational and sporting opportunities for the city, it will also cement Cardiff’s status on the international sporting map."

The Rotary Club of Cardiff Bay were delighted to be the headline sponsor for the Wheelchair Sports Spectacular again this year and additional support was also given by Cardiff University, University of Wales Institute Cardiff (UWIC), Invacare and Design Circle. Deloitte also supplied a team of over 30 volunteers to help deliver the sports.
