WRU Rugby Stars courses provide fun, rugby-based play for children of all ages and abilities, and now the WRU has developed a one day camp which offers opportunities and activities for children and young people with any disability or learning disability. It provides indoor and outdoor experiences that promote personal growth and foster independence.
WRU development staff have received specific training in order to run the courses and the first dates have now been released. The first Disability Inclusive rugby Stars course will be held in in Play Football Swansea on Thursday 20 Feb, with another confirmed for Thursday 27 February in the Scarlets Region. There will also be courses in the Blues, Dragons and north Wales regions.
Following a recent pilot of the new course in the Cardiff area, WRU Regional Development Manager Greg Woods said, "The day was thoroughly rewarding for everyone involved. There were children and young people of all ages and all disabilities and all the participants clearly got a lot out of the day, which included different skills activities and fun ball handling sessions.
"At the WRU, we pride ourselves in being inclusive and these courses enable us to reach out to new players and allow them to take a huge amount of fun and enjoyment from the game of rugby."
18 years old Sam from Caerphilly said, "I really enjoyed the day. I love sport and we played some touch rugby and learned new skills."
Course participants are encouraged to try new experiences in order to gain self-confidence, learn cooperation and communication in a safe and fun environment, providing a real experience for people with special needs.
Carers, parents and siblings alike are all welcome to stay, take part or just be present on the day.
