Independent Chairperson - Welsh Wheelchair Basketball Strategic Steering Group
We are seeking an experienced and dynamic individual to serve as the Independent Chair of the newly established Welsh Wheelchair Basketball Strategic Steering Group (WWBSSG). This important role will provide leadership and guidance as the Group works to shape the future of wheelchair basketball in Wales.
Overview
Working in close collaboration with Basketball Wales, British Wheelchair Basketball, Disability Sport Wales, Cardiff Metropolitan University, and the current network of clubs in Wales, the Strategic Group will drive forward a shared vision for the sustainable growth and development of the sport. The Independent Chair will play a key role in ensuring strong governance, facilitating effective collaboration among partners, and maintaining a clear strategic direction.
The Opportunity
This is a unique opportunity to influence positive change and champion inclusive sport across Wales. Initially the group will contribute to a four-year strategy for the development of wheelchair basketball in Wales for the period 2025 – 2028, aiming to;
- Increase the awareness of wheelchair basketball across Wales
- Establish a Welsh wheelchair basketball talent pathway
- Appoint Managers and Performance Coaches to lead Welsh age-grade squads

Work with Basketball Wales on shared commercial and sponsorship opportunities when considered to be of mutual benefit

Attract additional revenues including grants and other sources of funding to support the strategic and operational delivery of wheelchair basketball in Wales

Actively contribute to EDI plans of Basketball Wales
Chairperson Role Description
- The Chair is responsible for leadership of the WWBSSG ensuring its effectiveness in all aspects of its governance & operational roles.
- The Chair will represent the WWBSSG at meetings of its key stakeholders (BWB, BW, DSW, Cardiff Met).
- The Chair leads the WWBSSG in developing an ethical culture in line with the values of the Group.
- The Chair is pivotal in creating the conditions for overall WWBSSG and individual SSG members effectiveness and ensures constructive relations between the WWBSSG and stakeholders.
- The Chair is bound by the WWBSSG Heads of Terms, governance, policies, and decisions and thus has no individual authority to alter, amend or ignore these.
- The position of Chair does not create of itself a right to independent decision taking.
- The Chair may exercise those powers delegated to the position by the WWBSSG Heads of Terms.
Chairperson Role Duties
Manage Board Meetings
- To chair a minimum of 4 WWBSSG meetings a year, plus an annual general meeting. These board meetings are normally held in Wales.
Strategic Leadership and Governance
- To enable the Group to define the strategic direction and priorities and ensure there is appropriate resources available to deliver.
- To enable the Group to monitor and review risk associated with delivering the WWBSSG Strategy and likely impact on business while all times maintaining a high standard of governance.
Liaise with Stakeholders
- The Chair will manage the working relationship with Stakeholders.
Develop and Encourage Group Members
- Taking the lead in inducting and developing individual WWBSSG members, with a view to enhancing the Groups overall effectiveness as a team and assisting with succession planning.
Performance Assessment
- Ensuring that peer and self-assessments of performance are undertaken regularly for all members of the Group, including the Chair. The Chair may delegate certain aspects of his or her authority but remains accountable for the action of the delegate.
Promote Equity and Equality
- To enable equity in practice and strive for equality for all members, and stakeholders. To ensure the WWBSSG has and takes responsibility for the organisation’s Equality and Diversity Policy and implementation plan
