A swimming and multi sport group known as 'The Dredgers' took a January dip in the North Dock, Llanelli all in aid of raising money for Disability Sport Wales.
Now in its third year, the dip originated with a conversation between an Osprey supporter and a Scarlet’s fan, where both dared the other to a plunge into the icy waters should their team loose at the annual Boxing Day derby between the two sides. This resulted in both Scarlet’s and Osprey fans joining forces to raise money for charity, and needless to say, in the true spirit of the event, everyone braved the cold conditions.
The event has been developed and driven by social media which has seen numbers grow each year and it becoming an annual event
Main organiser, Gary Davies said "The first year's lunch was booked for 22 people, this year, we have taken over the whole pub, and have over 100! The raffle raised £2041.00, all of which will be donated to Disability Sports Wales"
“Disability Sports Wales struck a chord with local businesses which very generously donated raffle prizes. Some of the prizes were auctioned on the day at The Cornish Arms, Burry Port, where family and friends of The Dredgers gathered for a post dip lunch.”
Disability Sport Wales Executive director, Jon Morgan who joined the Dredgers on New Year’s Day said:
'We are so grateful to the Dredger's, Cornish Arms and local businesses for supporting Disability Sport Wales.
The support from club members and their families was fantastic and it is clear that everyone had a great day.
I can vouch that the water was freezing having joined the dredgers for a dip but the atmosphere and high spirits soon warmed everyone. Thanks to everyone who made the event such a success.”
