The Welsh team is celebrating after they successfully won medals and awards at the Typhoo National Junior Athletics Championships. Over 240 of the country’s finest young disabled athletes took part in this weekend’s event in Coventry (27 and 28 June).
The 10 Junior Academy athletes, supported by General Dynamics UK, came back with a trolley load of medals, 23 Gold 5 Silver and 1 Bronze. The athletes also produced 27 personal best performances, which equates to 93% overall. Additionally Megan Ashman, from Ceredigion, picked up the Outstanding Female Award, after her gold winning performances in 100m, shot and discus. Megan competed in the T/F44 classes.
Many elite disabled athletes began their own success at this prestigious event, including Aled Sion Davies, Rhys Jones and Hollie Arnold. Amongst the competitors in Coventry were those hopeful for the same golden career in athletics. The Championships at the University of Warwick’s athletics track were organised by the English Federation of Disability Sport (EFDS).
Nathan Stephens, Talent Officer for Disability Sport Wales said:
"There were 27 personal bests and big smiles all round. A huge thanks to the support staff and parents who supported the athletes over the weekend, a great team. But my biggest thanks go to all the athletes for being fantastic ambassadors for Disability Sport Wales and for giving 100% in everything they did."
Jon Morgan, Executive Officer for Disability Sport Wales said:
"It’s always exciting to see the future stars of tomorrow starting their competitive journeys. The Championships will have given these young athletes a great experience as well as a springboard from which to launch their careers. We are very grateful to Disability Sport Wales Academy Partner, General Dynamics United Kingdom, for supporting these young athletes in their first National competition."
