Students from Heronsbridge School were recently given the opportunity to meet Paralympian
world record holder Jayme Paris in a group spinning session at Bridgend Recreation Centre.
The students who took part in the event are all active members of the 5x60 programme, an initiative supported by Bridgend County Borough Council’s Active Young People Department.
Aside from the health benefits of keeping active the event gave the students a unique opportunity to meet and be inspired by a successful Australian athlete and ask questions about her experiences and achievements.
During her time in Bridgend Jayme continued to follow her strict training regime by using the facilities at Bridgend Recreation Centre, ensuring she remains in peak fitness for the year ahead.
Jayme said: "I really enjoyed the session and meeting the students. The 5x60 programme is clearly a great initiative which offers the students a lot of activities to experience and maybe even compete in one day."
A fantastic role model, cyclist, Jayme is the current world record holder for the 500m time trial event. After winning a bronze medal representing Australia in the Beijing Paralympic Games Jayme has gone on to become the number one female Paralympic cyclist in the world, holding the title for both track and road.
The 5x60 programme aims to increase the number of secondary age pupils taking part in sport or physical activity for 60 minutes, at least five times a week.
The event was also supported by Disability Sports Wales and demonstrates a commitment to the importance of keeping active.
