Disability Sport Wales’ Taekwondo stars Matt Bush and Beth Munro have both qualified for the 16th Summer Paralympic Games in Tokyo (24 August – 5 September), after securing their places at the European qualifying tournament in Sofia, Bulgaria, at the weekend.

It is a magnificent achievement by both athletes – with heavyweight Bush, the 2019 Para Taekwondo World Champion from St Clears in Carmarthenshire, aiming to add to his medal collection and Beth, the Cardiff-based former netball player and javelin thrower, becoming one of the newest members of GB Taekwondo’s Para squad.

Matt Bush said: “I am so excited now I know that I have secured a qualification spot for Tokyo. Huge thanks to Disability Sport Wales for all the support. I couldn’t have done it without you guys and all your persistence especially, from DSW’S National Performance Manager Anthony Hughes MBE.”

Beth Munro said: “I’m so delighted to have booked a place for Tokyo! I couldn’t have done it without the help and support from Disability Sport Wales, Taekwondo Cymru and GB Taekwondo who have helped me achieve this win. Here’s to aiming high in Tokyo in a few months’ time!”

Anthony Hughes MBE, Disability Sport Wales’ National Performance Manager, said: “It’s a very proud moment to watch our Welsh Para Taekwondo fighters win gold at the European Championships and secure a golden seat to Tokyo as it proves yet again our DSW and Taekwondo Cymru partners are doing the right thing with feeding the GB Taekwondo Pathway.”
