The disappointment of last year’s third place following four years of domination are now a distant memory as the local Tenderfoot Team once again regained their crown as Welsh Disabled Sports Team Champions at the Rotary sponsored Welsh Team Championships
held at the International Sports Village, Newport last Sunday.
Team Captain for the main Tenderfoot Team Lynsey McCarthy (Milford Haven) set the standards for the day winning the Table Tennis competition with fellow competitor James Dash (Spittal).
The team came first in two other events, that of the Boccia Competition thanks to John Richards and Angie Richards (both of Broad Haven) and Marion Haymer (Broadmoor), and the Kurling Competition thanks to Jonathan Hubbard (Kilgetty) and John And Angie Richards.
Second places also went to the Swimming Team of Darren Briggs (Milford Haven), Daniel Pullin and Jack Wood (both of Rosemarket), the Basketball Shoot-out Team, Weight Lifting Team and Short Tennis Team.
The second team under the captaincy of David Phillips (Pentlepoir) competed well throughout the day particularly following the late withdrawal of three competitors with notable performances from Francis Corbett (Narberth), Wayne Llewellyn (Llandisilio), Dianne Phillips (Pentlepoir), Kimberley Woolley (Kilgetty) and Simon Woolley (Hundleton), with first time swimmer Geriant Lewis (Saundersfoot) emotional swim one of the highlights of the day.
The Tenderfoot Team was formed in conjunction with the Rotary Clubs of Saundersfoot and Tenby who undertook the training for this year’s competition, ably assisted in the transport arrangements by the Rotary Club of Narberth and Whitland, with a strong contingent from the Saundersfoot travelling to Newport to support the teams. The Rotary Clubs can be justifiably proud of the fact that they are the only Clubs in Wales to undertake such training for the disabled.
Team Managers Rotarians Charles Hopkinson and Brian Waters of the Rotary Club of Saundersfoot could hardly contain their emotions, being extremely pleased with the dedication and strength shown by all team members, particularly as the event attracted team entries from all over Wales.
Tenderfoot will recommence training at the Regency Hall, Saundersfoot in September next year where new entrants would be encouraged to participate. Further information about Tenderfoot is available from Rotarian Charles Hopkinson on (01834) 813433.
