Pupils from the Hearing Impaired Unit at Llantarnam School have just completed a 10 week climbing course at Boulders in Cardiff. They learnt a variety of different skills including belaying and tying safety knots as well as climbing. Each pupil gained team building skills and enjoyed every minute. They passed their NCAS Level 1 qualification and are keen to develop their skills further. The staff would like to thank the Torfaen Disability Sports instructors Derek and Dean who nurtured the pupils’ confidence and gave them an unforgettable experience. They even managed to coax the staff themselves up the wall!

Another pupil at the Hearing Impaired Unit has successfully achieved her NCAS Level 1 qualification at Boulders in Cardiff thanks to Torfaen Disability Sports. Emma Gaylard, a year 9 pupil, is also registered blind. With the guidance of her instructors, Derek and Dean, she learned how to belay, tie safety knots and climb. Emma used the coloured handles to guide herself to the top of the walls and by the end of her 10 week course she was climbing overhangs and belaying Dean and 6th form boys! She is keen to develop her climbing skills and is looking forward to further visits to Boulders in the future.
