Seven athletes from Special Olympics Wales will be heading out to Los Angeles, California for the Special Olympic World Summer Games this week where more than 6,500 athletes with intellectual disabilities will compete from 165 nations in 25 Olympic type sports.

 A pre-departure Official Reception with the US Ambassador to the United Kingdom, His Excellency Mr Matthew Barzun will take place on the 20th July in London before the team depart for LA. There will also be a red carpet event at the British Consul’s Residence in Los Angeles on Friday 24th July to welcome the Great Britain Special Olympics team.

The Games start with the opening ceremony on the 25th July and are the largest sporting event of the year. Welsh athletes competing include Badminton player Lloyd Crawley, Ten pin bowler Kay Paytner, Swimmer Matthew Allen and four members of the kayaking team; Adrian Abbott, James Savory, Stephen Beynon and Andrew Williams.
