Laura Sugar competing in para canoeing at Tokyo 2020

Para Canoe is a test of speed, power and balance. Athletes compete over the sprint distance of 200 m in one of two types of boat - a kayak or a va’a.

Para Canoe appeared at the Paralympic Games in Rio 2016 with kayak events and Tokyo 2020 saw the addition of the va'a. Athletes use a double bladed paddle in kayak events and a single bladed paddle in va'a events to propel themselves across the flat water.
