Case Study: From a Chance Meeting to a Thriving Boccia Journey
Written by Stefano Antoniazzi and Darren Carew • July 2026
Finding an Opportunity
At the Royal Welsh Show 2025, Disability Sport Wales (DSW) staff, attending through connections with Sport Powys, met Sarah and her mum, Rhian, at the Sports Village.
After chatting with the pair, DSW staff invited them to try Boccia. Sarah and Rhian both enjoyed the activity, and the conversation quickly turned to what sporting opportunities were available closer to home. Living in St Clears, Carmarthenshire, they had struggled to find a suitable local sport that Sarah could regularly participate in.
Recognising a potential opportunity, DSW staff connected Sarah and Rhian with Angela Miles and the Crymych Panthers Boccia Club, a welcoming and accessible club located within travelling distance of their home.
Building Connections
Following the introduction, Sarah and Rhian attended a Crymych Panthers session and quickly became regular members of the club.
Since joining, Sarah has embraced the sport and the opportunities that have come with it. She has already represented the club at a Special Olympics Boccia competition in Kidwelly and is currently preparing to compete in the upcoming Crymych Panthers club competition.
The impact has extended far beyond competition:
"Sarah's confidence has increased and she often talks about and promotes Boccia in different sessions she attends. She has made a lot more friends since attending Angela's sessions and has improved her skills."

More Than Just Sport
The welcoming environment at Crymych Panthers has benefited the whole family. Rhian has become actively involved in the club, helping to referee during sessions and competitions.
The experience has also led to new friendships and unexpected connections, with Rhian discovering that she, Angela and Angela's sister had competed against one another in sport when they were younger.
For Rhian, one of the greatest strengths of Boccia is the balance between competition and community.
She values the competitive opportunities available to Sarah while also appreciating the warm, inclusive and supportive atmosphere that makes everyone feel welcome.
The Difference DSW Can Make
This story highlights the power of simple conversations and strong local partnerships. A chance meeting at the Royal Welsh Show led to a connection with a local club, opening the door to regular participation, competition, new friendships and increased confidence.
Through collaboration with partners and community clubs across Wales, DSW continues to help disabled people find opportunities to be active, belong and thrive through sport.
