Welshpool Bowling Club – Inclusive Facilities Case Study

Written by Stefano Antoniazzi and Darren Carew    May 2026

Receiving National Lottery funding has had a transformative impact on Welshpool Bowling Club, enabling the club to upgrade its toilet and changing facilities to become more accessible and welcoming for disabled people, families, and the wider community.

Welshpool Bowling Club club house

Before the project, the club recognised that its existing facilities were limiting accessibility and creating barriers for some members and visitors. The club wanted to modernise its clubhouse and ensure that everyone could enjoy both the social and sporting aspects of the club in a safe, comfortable, and inclusive environment.

Thanks to National Lottery funding, the club was able to fully install a new disability inclusive toilet and changing facility. The improvements included accessible amenities and the addition of a baby changing unit, creating a more practical and family-friendly space for all visitors.

The impact of the project has already been significant. The new facilities have enabled disabled members and visitors to access and enjoy the club more comfortably, including partners and family members who previously found it difficult or impossible to attend. The improvements have also created a more welcoming environment for families attending functions and community events hosted at the club.

Importantly, the upgraded facilities are helping the club grow participation opportunities for disabled people within bowls. With accessible facilities now in place, the club is actively encouraging more disabled bowlers to get involved, confident that the environment can properly support their needs and provide a positive experience.

The project has also had wider benefits for the clubhouse environment. As part of the refurbishment, years of clutter were removed from the men’s changing area, creating a tidier, more welcoming, and better organised space for all members and visitors.

The club describes the project as an important step forward in becoming a more inclusive and accessible community venue. Without National Lottery support, the work would not have been possible. The funding has allowed the club to future-proof its facilities, improve the experience for existing members, and open its doors to new disabled participants and families across the local community.
