Pan-Disability Football - Llechryd Dragons AFC

Written by Stefano Antoniazzi    September 2025

Background

In October 2023, during an insport Series event in Cardigan, Ceredigion Actif staff conducted questionnaires with parents and children to assess the demand for disability-inclusive sporting and play activities. While a multi-sport club existed in Cardigan, the feedback highlighted a strong desire among teenagers for a sport-specific club. Recognising this gap, Ceredigion Actif took started to develop a dedicated Pan-Disability Football session in the area.

Ceredigion Actif has committed to fully supporting the sessions throughout 2025. The long-term goal is to transition the sessions into a formal pan-disability football team under Llechryd Football Club. This team would compete in fixtures against other pan-disability football teams, providing a structured competitive pathway for participants.

The sessions have successfully attracted an average of 10 young participants per week, with a balanced mix of male and female players with both physical disabilities and learning disabilities. This inclusive environment has fostered a sense of community and enthusiasm for football among the attendees.

The hard work by all involved has resulted in Llechryd Dragons Pan Disability Football team heading to Aberystwyth to play in their first tournament with teams from around Wales in the FAW tournament.

The pan-disability football sessions in Cardigan are working well due to effective collaboration and inclusive sports development. By addressing the need and working together, Ceredigion Actif has successfully created an engaging and sustainable football activities for young people with disabilities. The initiative’s long-term vision of forming a competitive team ensures that participants will continue to benefit from structured football experiences for years to come.
