Objectives for achieving insport NGB Bronze Standard

As Case Officer, you must see ‘evidence’ that the aims for each insport Standard have been achieved by the NGB, and then it is the NGB’s responsibility to facilitate the demonstration of each aim.

You should not encourage the NGB to compile a file of evidence, but should arrange meetings with the insport NGB Lead Officer so that they can ‘see’ the support against each of the criteria.

Aims:

1. Workforce Development

  • Ensure Tutor Trainers (TTs) and Coach Educators (CEs) are up skilled with DIT.

  • Identify an NGB Disability Inclusion Plan, share this internally and with membership.

  • To review all coach education courses within the sport to ensure inclusive / disability-specific content is embedded within.

  • Review NGB role descriptions to ensure they refer to inclusion and equity.

2. Programme Support

  • Ensure that the website is accessible and representative of disability sport.
  • To ensure that the participant pathway is inclusive of disabled participants, and represented appropriately.

3. Organisation

  • The NGB has a specific Disability Inclusion Plan or Strategy, or disability inclusion is embedded within their wider organisational strategy.
  • Positive engagement with appropriate stakeholders to shape inclusion provision.
  • Audit of clubs, coaches and competitions for inclusion, integration and impairment-specific opportunity, equipment and facilities.
  • Annual data collection process includes requests for information on disability and impairment for participants, coaches and officials.
  • Communicated commitment to the creation of all future documents in accessible format(s).
  • Map NGB accreditation against insport Club aims and align to insport Club standard as appropriate.
  • Commitment to achieving insport NGB Silver Standard.

  • Review documentation highlighting areas where disability inclusion will be added/strengthened.

1.4   Review NGB role descriptions to ensure they refer to inclusion and equity.

Prompts

  • Ask for access to all Job Descriptions (JDs) and/or Role Descriptions (RDs) and check for the presence of a reference to inclusion, disability or equity/equality.
  • The reference should be along the lines that it is everyone’s job to ensure that disabled people have the equitable opportunities to be involved with ‘the’ sport, therefore all practice should be inclusive of disabled people, and equality should be a focus for everything on their work programmes.
  • If this is not evident, and at an appropriate point, the NGB (C)EO/D should be encouraged to include such statements on the JD/RD, and on all future JD/RDs developed.

Support

  • Sight of Job or Role Descriptions which incorporate an appropriate reference to the inclusion of disabled people or equitable provision.

2. Programme Support

2.1  Ensure that the website is accessible and representative of disability sport.

Prompts

  • This aim is intended to continue to extend your communication with disabled communities about your offer. The two biggest challenges for organisations are that their websites are often not accessible, or that the information is not reflective of the individuals the organisation is trying to target. This is an extension of the aim around marketing at Ribbon standard, and within the support associated against this aim there should be clear attempts made to address some of the challenges.
  • Is there an obvious area on the website for disability sport? OR (even better) is disability sport included within all the sections of the website?
  • Are there links through to other organisations who provide/are responsible for disability sport (e.g. DSW)?
  • You do not have to have a AAA rated website as this can be costly and unrealistic (for some organisations) but think innovatively and creatively about what CAN be done to enable as many people as possible to engage with your content and translate into your services.
  • Refer to W3C Web Accessibility Guidelines for further information and prompts – ideally the NGB should be looking to work towards AA (Double-A) compliance.
  • Are there images of disabled people/athletes on the website?

Support

  • Screenshots of areas of your website where you have representations of diversity and inclusion; or where the offer to disabled people is clearly communicated.
  • Links to documents which provide guidance to disabled people, or partners, about opportunities associated with your organisation – whether in terms of employment or participation.
  • CO able to easily navigate around the NGB website and find whatever they need from a disability sport perspective. CO identifies a written statement attesting to that.
  • Acknowledgement from CO that website is AA compliant.

2.2  To ensure that the participant pathway is inclusive of disabled participants, and represented appropriately.

Prompts

  • What competitive opportunities exist for children and young people with an impairment? (Could existing school or club competitions be adapted to include participants with an impairment?).
  • What is the involvement of the NGB or DSW performance pathway teams in the pathway structure?
  • Is the Sport Wales Performance Advisor aware of the NGB working towards insport?
  • Is the Performance Mapping document reviewed and maintained?
  • Do core NGB staff have a level of knowledge and understanding around profiling and pathway within ‘para’ sport? (including classification).
  • Is the NGB aware of the current standing of their sport within a global ‘Para’ setting?
  • Case Officer to contact DSW regarding performance pathway links.

Support

  • Sight of the NGB participant pathway, and that disability sport opportunities and opportunities for disabled people are clearly included.
  • Completed/Updated Performance Mapping document (Inclusion Spectrum), include RAG code for identified areas of development and/or priority areas.
  • Case study highlighting examples of individuals progressing along the participant pathway.
  • Minutes of meetings with NGB Officers and DSW Performance Pathway Officers at which development of pathway opportunities are discussed.
  • Review of competition structures, highlighting inclusive or specific opportunities.
  • Copy of inclusive competition resources (e.g. entry forms and marketing materials include references of the inclusive opportunities).
  • Evidence engagement via Para Sport group.

3. Organisation

  • When compiling their NGB Partnership information with Sport Wales, do they include opportunities, participation levels, and demographic information which relates to disabled people?

  • What was the rationale for their approach on specific or wider strategy when considering disability inclusion?

Support

  • Excerpts of your planning documents where inclusion of disabled people is reflected.
  • Entire planning document(s) with relevant areas highlighted.
  • Copy of inclusive organisational strategy.
  • Copy of disability inclusion strategy or plan.

3.2  Positive engagement with appropriate stakeholders to shape inclusion provision.

Prompts

  • Who are going to be the most appropriate people to involve in this steering group?
  • Do you have any contacts who might be useful to the NGB?
  • Part of your role around including disabled people within your area of the sector is the advocacy to others of inclusive practices and approaches. This can be formally acknowledged, and the value of such practice communicated through the service level agreements, or any delivery contracts which might be created.
  • Examples may include grant offer letters, delivery contracts, work with partner sport development teams, work with partner NGBs, other key agencies, etc.
  • You might include something straightforward which identifies your expectation regarding values and behaviours associated with inclusion, or it may be something more formal linked to policy.

  • What does accessible format mean to the NGB?
  • Has the NGB got any information which might identify to them whether they need to have information readily available in a specific form of accessible format?
  • Is the NGB aware of the different ways in which they could ensure that all their information is created in accessible format?
  • What level of commitment will the NGB give to creating documents in accessible formats in the future?

Support

  • Documented commitment to creating future documents in accessible format.
  • Reference to accessible documents.
  • Copy of inclusive marketing and communication policy.
