insport NGB Case Officer's Resource Pack

Objectives for achieving insport NGB Ribbon Standard

Suggested support for each of the aims can be uploaded on to the insport Portal. As Case Officer, you will have access to the portal to view any support that the NGB has uploaded against the aims for each insport Standard, and will either approve or suggest recommendations in order to achieve the aim. It is the club’s responsibility to facilitate the demonstration of each aim.

Aims:

1. Workforce Development

  • Board and NGB senior leadership staff to complete Disability Inclusion Training (UK DIT (NGB) or equivalent)

2. Programme Support

  • To identify existing pathways within the sport for disabled people.
  • Ensure that promotional activities depict sport as an inclusive sport (including images and stories of success for both non-disabled and disabled participants and performers)

3. Organisation

  • Establish agreement and in-principle commitment at Board level to work towards an inclusive philosophy of development for the sport.
  • Write a statement of inclusion and communicate it appropriately to members.
  • Communicate to club networks the NGB’s position in their commitment to insport and inclusion.
  • On successful award of Ribbon, to make a commitment to progress to Bronze phase within a mutually agreed time frame

Aims:

1. Workforce Development

1.1 Board and NGB senior leadership staff to complete Disability Inclusion Training (UK DIT (NGB) or equivalent)

Prompts:

  • This is fundamentally the identification of a desire from Board members and non-technical governing body staff to attend Disability Inclusion Training.  If the workshop has run prior to the NGB attending their panel meeting that is ideal, but if this is not possible, a commitment to doing it is sufficient to gain Ribbon Standard.
  • Ideally DSW would advocate the Board and non-technical staff attend the DIT aimed specifically at NGB’s because it can be tailored to suit the needs of the individual Board/nontechnical staff.  However, equivalent workshops may be utilised and would therefore be recognised as appropriate to achieve this criterion.  However, it must be:
    • 3 hours (or equivalent if online or blended learning) in length.
    • Focussed exclusively on disability/impairment.

Support:

  • Certification which identifies that Board members and non-technical governing body staff have attended an appropriate disability inclusion training workshop
  • A date confirmed with DSW (or another DIT provider) to deliver a workshop to the Board and nontechnical governing body staff AND a list of names of those individuals who have confirmed their availability to attend.
  • A written commitment from the Chair of the Board and the (Chief) Executive Officer/Director that they will run a disability inclusion training workshop within the next 3 months for Board and non-technical staff.

2. Programme Support

2.1 To identify existing pathways within the sport for disabled people.

Prompts:

This section asks you to look at your existing sport provision.

  • Do you have a pathway, from community through to performance opportunities?
  • Are any of your opportunities inclusive?
  • Do you have any disability specific sessions within your sport?
  • Do you have an existing diagram/ written overview which identifies the pathway for your NGB for a participant/athlete?  If so, can you map any of your inclusive opportunities to be represented within the diagram?

Support:

  • Diagrammatic representation of the player pathway for the sport.
  • Discussion relating to how the player pathway is populated, and how the sport’s infrastructure support engagement throughout the pathway

2.2 Ensure that promotional activities depict sport as an inclusive sport (including images and stories of success for both non-disabled and disabled participants and performers).

Prompts:

  • If you have a website, do you post any photos or stories of disabled/Paralympic athletes in your sport?
  • Do you produce a newsletter, brochures, flyers, pop-ups, or leaflets? Is there representation in them of disabled athletes/ participants? If not, would this be possible? If you are not aware of any participants/ athletes in your sport, DSW may be able to help by identifying any links that we have at present.

Support:

  • Case Officers will review all electronic and print materials which are circulated or available for promotional purposes.  Links to electronic resources and copies of print materials should be supplied to the Case Officer by the insport NGB Lead Officer.

3. Organisation

3.1 Establish agreement and in-principle commitment at Board level to work towards an inclusive philosophy of development for the sport.

Prompts:

  • What does the NGB mean by inclusion?
  • Is what they are defining as inclusion appropriate and achievable?
  • What are their plans as an organisation for future development of the sport?  Are there any generic statements for development? Can this/ these be made inclusive, rather than creating a separate statement about inclusion?
  • Is it useful to have a separate statement about inclusion?

Support:

  • Case Officer attendance at meetings in which Board representatives identify their support.
  • Written agreement on behalf of Board to build an inclusive philosophy.
  • Case Officer discussions with Board members regarding their commitment to inclusion within the sport.
  • Sight of minutes from Board meetings attesting to Board commitment to inclusion within the sport.

3.2 Write a statement of inclusion and communicate it appropriately to members.

Prompts:

  • What does the NGB consider inclusion to be?
  • Is it using terms like impairment or disability? Does it use medical or social model terminology?
  • Where will be the best place/s to include the statement?  Where will it be most effectively communicated to members?
  • Is the NGB considering using alternative formats?

Support:

  • Written statement of inclusion.  insport NGB Lead Officer should provide the source or refer the Case Officer to the appropriate section of the website.
  • Discussion with the Case Officer surrounding the decision-making process regarding the communication of the statement to members.
  • Case Officer to have sight of statement provided in alternative formats (if applicable).

3.3 Communicate to club networks the NGB’s position in their commitment to insport and inclusion.

Prompts:

  • What is the NGB’s current communication with clubs like?
  • Does it have a newsletter which goes out to all clubs? Do they have a club section on their website?
  • Has it accurately identified the purpose of insport NGB? Can it refer a club to insport Club? Is the NGB aware of that aspect of insport as well?

Support:

  • Written commitment to the dissemination of information regarding insport and inclusion to clubs.
  • Verbal, written, or diagrammatic representation of the NGB’s proposed method for communication of insport and inclusion.

3.4 On successful award of Ribbon, to make a commitment to progress to Bronze phase within a mutually agreed time frame

Prompts:

  • What levels of support does the NGB anticipate will be needed to move forward to the next Standard?
  • Has it done things which already contribute to the achievement of the next Standard?

Support:

  • The mutually agreed time frame must be realistic.
  • This will be demonstrated within the presentation made to the panel but may also be identified in writing by the Chair of the Board, or by the Chief Executive (or equivalent) Officer.
